5 Signs You Need an MCAT Tutor (Not Just More Practice Tests)

Most premeds default to the same fix when their MCAT score stalls: run more practice tests. More reps can help, but volume alone doesn’t fix a gap in understanding, and it can’t tell you why you keep missing the same type of question. At some point, the issue isn’t how much you’re practicing, it’s whether you’re getting the kind of feedback that actually changes how you think through a passage. Here are five signs pointing toward how to improve MCAT score when another practice block isn’t the answer.

The Signs to Watch For

You keep missing the same type of question. If your CARS timing, a specific content area, or a particular passage style trips you up test after test, that’s not bad luck, it’s a pattern. Practice tests are good at telling you a problem exists; they’re bad at telling you why it keeps happening. A tutor can sit inside your reasoning in real time and point out the exact habit that’s costing you points, something a score report alone will never do.

Your score has plateaued despite putting in the hours. Studying more when you’ve hit a wall usually just reinforces whatever isn’t working. If your practice score hasn’t moved in weeks even though your study time has gone up, that’s usually a sign your current approach has run its course, not that you need to grind harder at the same routine.

You can’t tell the difference between a careless mistake and a real content gap. Self-grading tends to blur these together, so a wrong answer gets filed away as “i just wasn’t careful” when it’s actually a misunderstanding that will keep resurfacing. Outside eyes are much better at separating the two, and at telling you which one actually deserves your study time.

Conclusion

None of these signs mean you’re behind or doing something wrong; they just mean self-study has taken you as far as it can on its own. Recognizing that early, rather than after months of flat scores, is usually what separates students who break through a plateau from students who stay stuck in it. If more than one of these sounds familiar, it may be time to bring in support built around your specific gaps rather than another round of generic practice.
