Hydrogen fuel cell technology is getting recognition since it has started using heavy equipment. After successful experiments with the technology in different heavy equipment, the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered RTG crane, has demonstrated the practical viability and benefits in port operations. The H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane is likely to bring revolution in the industry with this latest tech, as it will be a more cost-effective solution for construction projects.
When did the H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane launch?
The H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane was formally introduced on May 15, 2024, at Yusen Terminals Inc. (YTI) in the Port of Los Angeles by PACECO Corp., in collaboration with MITSUI E&S. The project was launched with funding support from the Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). This historic occasion highlights the group’s efforts to improve port sustainability and technology. In addition to showcasing cutting-edge innovations, the event also featured a section where attendees could explore used cranes for sale.

Innovative Fuel Cell Technology for Hydrogen
This crane, created by MITSUI E&S and constructed in Japan, uses a highly effective Fuel Cell Power Pack (FCPP) in place of the traditional diesel genset. The FCPP is fueled by hydrogen provided by Toyota Tsusho and was created and built in Oita, Japan by MITSUI E&S. With the help of this technique, the crane can run exclusively on hydrogen fuel cells, doing away with the pollutants that are normally connected to RTG cranes that run on diesel. The company is also working to alter and make transformation in used cranes for sale, to make them more efficient and cost-effective.
The reduced emissions and environmental impact
Traditional diesel-powered RTG cranes release a substantial quantity of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere—more than 400 barrels of oil are used annually.
Whereas, the H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane, in contrast, produces no carbon emissions. The crane’s capacity to revolutionize the environmental impact of port operations is demonstrated by this notable decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. The hydrogen fuel cell technology of the crane also significantly lowers noise pollution, which is advantageous to nearby residents and port personnel.
Pilot Project and Effectiveness of Operations
At YTI, the H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane is scheduled to run 16 hours a day for the duration of its four-year experimental project. It claims to perform at least as well as traditional diesel or hybrid RTG cranes. The crane’s capacity to operate with zero emissions and high operating efficiency makes it a prime example of sustainable port technology.
Troy Collard, general manager of sales at PACECO said: “By bringing the H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane into operation, we are not just introducing new fuel technology for cranes but are leading the way for our industry to reduce emissions significantly.”
He further added: “We are happy that this crane is already in use in Los Angeles and appreciate all of the assistance provided by our pilot partners during the project.”
