Open Auto Transport 101: What Every Car Owner Should Know

If you’ve gotten a quote to ship a vehicle, chances are it defaulted to open transport. It’s the method most carriers use, and for good reason — it’s efficient, widely available, and works well for the vast majority of vehicles. But if you’ve never shipped a car before, it helps to know exactly what you’re signing up for before your vehicle rolls onto the trailer.

The Basics of Open Auto Transport

Open transport simply means your vehicle rides on a trailer exposed to the open air, alongside other vehicles, rather than inside an enclosed container. It’s the standard setup for a car shipping service because it lets carriers move more vehicles per trip, which keeps costs down for everyone using the route.

It’s worth comparing to the alternative. Enclosed transport protects a vehicle from weather and road debris, which matters for classic cars, luxury vehicles, or anything you’d rather not expose to the elements — but it comes at a noticeably higher price. For most everyday vehicles, open transport is the more practical choice.

You’ll also decide how the vehicle gets picked up and dropped off. Terminal shipping means bringing your car to a designated lot, while door-to-door service has the carrier come directly to you at both ends. Either works with open transport — it’s simply a matter of convenience versus a slightly lower cost.

Since the vehicle is exposed during transit, it’s normal to see some road dust or grime on arrival — that’s cosmetic and washes off. What matters more is confirming your carrier’s insurance coverage before pickup, since limits and deductibles vary by company, and asking whether a pre-transit inspection report will be provided.

Open transport is also generally the fastest method to book, simply because more carriers run it. If your timeline is tight, ask your provider about expedited car shipping — since open trailers are already the default, rush requests tend to be easier to accommodate than with enclosed transport.

Availability also varies by region. Car shipping in Florida can slow down slightly during snowbird season, when demand for open-trailer routes spikes.

For the vast majority of car owners, open transport is the right call — it’s affordable, widely available, and handled by carriers who move vehicles this way every single day. Save enclosed transport for vehicles that truly need the extra protection, and you’ll get your car where it’s going without paying for more than you need.
